Stockwell Receives Charter Schools Leadership Award
Chuck Stockwell, founder and CEO of Smart Schools Inc. and co-founder of Charyl Stockwell Academy in Howell and Grand Traverse Academy in Traverse City, is receiving a Leadership Award from the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA).
Stockwell will receive his award during the opening dinner Thursday of the 6th annual Michigan Charter Schools Conference at the Hyatt Regency-Dearborn. More than 1,000 charter teachers, administrators and supporters will attend the conference.
MAPSA's Leadership Awards honor those individuals who make bold moves to improve education for all children.
“Chuck is a tireless leader and innovator, driven by a passion for children, parents and education that optimizes learning for every student,” MAPSA President Dan Quisenberry said. “With more than 30 years of progressive teaching and leadership experience, Chuck inspires everyone around him to do more, do it better, and achieve more for the children.”
Stockwell has been the impetus behind MAPSA’s special education task force, resolute in his determination to help schools implement a special education system that finally enables children to overcome their learning challenges and sail to the peak of their learning abilities.
Under his leadership, the Smart Schools organization has adopted and implemented Dr. William Glasser’s Choice Theories. The schools it serves have developed a top-notch character education program, winning a four-year U.S. Department of Education grant for $1.6 million to research, hone and expand the effort. The schools also use a leading-edge, intense quality improvement process. They both have outstanding MEAP scores.
During his career, Stockwell has been principal, director of special education, college trustee, and founder and executive director of Charyl Stockwell Academy. He has experience in all areas of administration, including business, personnel, school building design, and management of regular and special education programs.
“Chuck is a fierce advocate for children and parents,” Quisenberry said. “He embodies all that the charter school movement hopes to be.”
