Academy names Shelly Stockwell its new principal By Kristin Lukowski DAILY PRESS & ARGUS
Shelley Stockwell has a special reason for being excited about her new position.
She will soon take the reins as principal of the Charyl Stockwell Academy in Hartland Township. The charter school is named after her daughter, Charyl Stockwell, who finished the eighth grade just before she died of a brain tumor in July 2001.
Stockwell has already taken over her new positions, bringing with her nearly 30 years of experience in education. She´s been an administrator for 13 years, working in the Livonia, Wayne-Westland and Lincoln school districts.
I´m thrilled to be able to do this, she said.
Stockwell, who has a master´s degree in guidance and counseling and a bachelor´s degree in special education, participated in the formation of the school early on, as her husband is a founder, and has a vested interest in it.
Stockwell said she´s looking forward to working with the school´s growth, as a modular unit will contain the middle-school program in the fall. Her main goal is to keep the school moving forward on its existing foundation and to keep advancing.
I value what the school is about, she said.
The objective of the Charyl Stockwell academy is to establish a learning environment in which all students can succeed. The school is one of three schools managed by Smart Schools, including the Livingston Technical Academy and Grand Traverse Academy in Traverse City.
